How many plants and how much potting soil do you need?
There are a lot of questions about filling planters and pots. The questions are mostly about the amount of potting soil and the number of plants to fill the planter.
In this blog we would like to give advice on the number of plants that makes the planter a beautiful whole. We also indicate how much extra soil is needed for this. First, the square or rectangular planter is discussed, and after that the circular planter.
If you want to fill a planter, you have to know the volume of the part that you would like to fill. Some big planters allow you to make a double floor, which can be made from hydro grains, a wooden platform or Styrofoam. A layer of 20-30 cm of potting soil will be enough for the plant to grow during the whole season. The height depends on the size of the root ball you place into the planter.

- Measure the height of the planter (or till the double floor) in centimeters
- Measure the width of the planter in centimeters
Fill in the abovementioned sizes in the following equation and you will know the amount of litres potting soil that you need:
- length x height x width / 800 = number of litres of potting soil
- Number of plants rectangular planter
In the following table you can find how many plants per area make for a nice filling of the planter:
In the following table you can find how many plants per area make for a nice filling of the planter:
Surface area | Rack | Pyramid | Pyramid XL | Hanging plant |
0,25 m2 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
0,50 m2 | 9 | 5 | 4 | 4 |
1,00 m2 | 36 | 25 | 16 | 16 |
2. Filling a circular planter
- How much potting soil in a circular planter?
- measure the diameter (width of the planter from edge to edge) in centimeters
- measure the height of the planter (or till double floor) in centimeters
Fill in the abovementioned sizes in the following equation and you will know the amount of litres potting soil that you need.
- diameter x diameter x height / 1800 = number of liters of potting soil
- Number of plants circular planter
In the following table you can find how many plants per area make for a nice filling of the planter:
Surface area | Rack | Pyramid | Pyramid XL | Hanging plant |
0,25 m2 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
